Entering the large nave, you will be impressed with the major altar placed on the mezzanine: it was built in 1667 by Antonio Pino and it is a pyramid altar with beautiful gilded figures of angels and maidens demonstrating the artist’s great carving capacity.
The chapels San Rocco and San Carlo are very interesting. They were decorated by Morazzone.
San Rocco chapel was completed in 1617, with its splendid altarpiece dated 1612, it is a great sample of proportion and beauty: the figure of San Rocco on the altarpiece, so potent and immense, begging for mercy and staring at the angel inserting his sword in the sheath, is a clear example of the early 1600’s Lombard pictorial culture.
The figure of the Saint pleading to sedate contagion will be the symbol of an era threatened by plague. Notice the outline of his left hand against the light and the cold tones of the landscape behind.
The first chapel on the left is dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo. The frescoes depict the life of the Saint from Arona. It is attributed to Morazzone who creates the canvas with the Glorification of San Carlo around 1617. The saint looks up towards the sky while two young angels crown him with the word “Humiltas”.
