Palazzo Longoni
The 18th Century Longoni Palace, built up after the will of the homonymous land owner of Borgolavezzaro as private residence, stands in the village centre, along the state road leading to Mortara, in Lower Lomellina. Building housed the Marshal Radetzky’s general headquarters on the occasion of the first Independence War in 1849. After changing fortunes, the Municipality purchased the building for 19,000 Liras in 1873, and from that time on it has become seat of the local primary schools. The building shows a quite long duplex core, with two southern ledges. Along the southern front, once facing the garden, a porch develops at the ground floor with Baroque-style segmental arches, supported by big pillars, against which a pilaster strip leans extending along the whole building height. The main span is larger than the others and the corresponding first floor window has an elegant balcony with wrought-iron balustrade, decorated with typical Baroque style leaf and raceme decorations. This building side raises over the pitch by one storey, enough to form a turret. The rooms of the ground floors usually have vaulted ceilings, while those of the upper floors show wooden ones. The monumental staircase, the sole remained of the original three, the skilfully decorated downstairs stateroom, and also the recently restored cottages housing art exhibitions are valuable.
