The Torbiera of Conturbia covers partially a larger area, which, spotted with ponds and peateries, first of all the Lagoni of Mercurago, extends up to
Agrate Conturbia. The environment of peatery was formed by the progressive built-up of the dead parts of vegetal on the bottom of the lakes, the vegetal remains change into peat thanks to a process of partial decomposition.
In the 20th century, the wet woods covered vast areas, before being reduced into small remnants by draining works and canalizations of water courses. In this zone, by chance in 1861, some parts of pile-works, fictile rests in terracotta and worked flintstones from the Mesolithic Age were found out. Now the territory is under the regional safeguard and protected by special regulations for the ecological preservation. In this area there is a (private) faunal park, open to public, which enhanced and revived the native fl ora and fauna,
perfectly integrating with the natural habitat.
The several ponds, enriching the region, are peateries of post-glacial origins, which are characterized by the typical vegetation and amphibians as the triton, reptiles as the water-snake as well as birds bound to the presence of
water as Ardeides and Anatides. The area is covered, also, with plain woods of alders, pedunculate oaks, birches, chestnuts and willows shelter of many animal and vegetal species. The glades are regularly attended by roebucks, foxes, martens, reptiles, swamp falcons and other bird species. Besides, the natural environment of the peatery helps both the surviving and reproduction
of the stationary animals and also that of migratory species of passage.
