Asilo Infantile De Medici
The nursery school in Bellinzago Novarese, represents one of the most interesting testimonies of Alessando Antonelli’s creations. He dedicated himself to it in an advanced age, but rich in honours and experience. At this point he preferred to use a synthesis of all the techniques he had used in the past, though with new expressive methods; this choice drove him away from his congenial techniques, but still, the signs of an accomplished personality are obvious. The conception of a nursery school is attributed to the attorney Gabriele De Medici, born in Bellinzago but whose town of adaptation was Novara. In his testament, dated may 2, 1859, he says: “Wishing to declare my Last Will, I order (….) the construction of a nursery school in Bellinzago”. Therefore this document can be considered as the birth certificate of this institution, though another 17 years will pass before its official inauguration ceremony, on may 28, 1876. The same testament specifies that the nursery school should be named after its founder and be opened within four years from the end of the tenancy agreement, permitted to Donna Marietta D’Adda, De Medici’s wife, and her sister, Diamanta. Since four years were considered to be a restricted period to fulfil this enterprise, before Donna Marietta’s death (1872), Alessandro Antonelli is consulted, choosing the best area to start working. He is also asked to present a project for the factory. Antonelli was very famous in Bellinzago since he had designed the plan for the parish church, inaugurated almost 30 years before. His works were considered of great importance and due to his emotional attachment to the village, he did the project for free. Actually, he was the first to design a building destined to serve education purposes for very young children, and which has kept its role up to today. The entire building is disposed in a functional way. At the tame Antonelli avoids to respect a precise style, giving space to a sober and original expression. The project was approved in 1873 and after some financial difficulties, works are started. The population, witness of what had happened to the parish church, offers for free its contribution during the celebrations: concession made by the bishop of Novara. The people of Bellinzago would carry materials and offer workforce. The inauguration takes place on may 28, 1876, a date considered as favourable since it was the 700th anniversary from the victory of the Legnano battle ( may 28, 1176), which had signed the conquer of the local administrator’s independence. The celebrations were a great success, as it emerges from the article of June 3, on the paper La vendetta: “the celebrations were carried out better than what we would have expected”. The authorities reached the village at around nine in the morning and were accompanied to the Town Hall, after having been welcomed by the shots of eight small canons that had been positioned on the hillside. Once the mass and the official speeches had been concluded, a children gymnastics exhibition took place, followed by supper, offered by the Major Francesco Vandoni. The day, after other events, was concluded late in the evening with the ascension of two aerostatic balloons, create by master Apostolo. The children’s take care was entrusted to the daughter’s of Sant’Anna nuns, founded by Beata Suora Rosa Gattorno: today still present in the nursery school.
