The parish Church of Borgolavezzaro, dedicated to the Saints Bartolomeo and Gaudenzio, was designed by Antonelli in 1835 but it was built later on according to a new project, between 1856 and 1863. The church was raised by will of Don Iacchetti di Riva, who never saw it completed since he died in 1860. The edifice was built where an older church once stood, following architectonic models that recalled classic elements, such as the tall, granite columns with Corinthian capitals of the pronaos, the tympanum with a circular niche, the two angelic figures that recall the Fama, and other cornices, lesenes (Vertical strip resembling a pilaster) and semi-columns which divide surfaces in a regular way. The four big columns in the pronaos, constant elements of the antonellian creations, support a lintel, with tympanum and a cornice which hosts the bust that represents Padre Eterno (God).
Above the portal, San Bartolomeo martyrdom is depicted, while on its sides one can see two circular windows with coloured glasses.
The inside is composed of one nave, with barrel vault supported by a double row of columns that ran along the perimeter walls.
Here Antonelli expressed his best technical knowledge, using united bricks with lime to cover big spaces with innovative static resolutions, considered to be impossible back then.
The vault is illuminated thanks to the wide, rectangular glass windows, which depict different Gospel episodes.
The rear of the old edifice’s presbytery, hosts a marble major altar dated 1754; while the two lateral altars belong to the nineteenth century. The belfry, built during the XVIII century, was included in the new antonellian construction.
The church was opened to cult in 1862 and consecrated on April, 1866, although the war of 1859. As it emerges from archivist sources, the church’s construction cost 103.000 liras.
