The ruins of the ancient rural parish church are north of the village, outside the inhabited centre at the limits of a wooden area. It is already mentioned by Innocenzo II in a bull of 1113, as "Plebem de Gatico cum capellis suis" and, later, a certain Stefano, Archpriest of Cureggio, witnesses its presence in the consecration of various churches between 1118 and 1144. However, only in 1357 San Martino is clearly mentioned in the “Liber Clery” as Parish priest’s seat. We learn from a pastoral visit of Bishop Meraviglia (1677) that the church is in bad conditions. And since then nothing had been probably done to improve the building static condition, as much that now it appears without roof and floor. The church has a nave and two aisles with three semicircular apses, six arches supported by big pilasters and in the front, above the entrance portal; you can see a trapezoidal archivolt, which is overlooked by a semicircular lunette. The walls are mostly composed of large square stone blocks. The San Martino’s dating could be supposed to be around the first quarter of the XII century. In these last twenty years much has been done to strengthen the structure and clean the walling apparatus of the ancient rural parish church, stirring up by this way the sense of mystery and fascination the ancient monument diffuses.
