As a document of the year 1450 testifies, “Fara counts two castles, 50 “fires”( families), responds to the town and Podesta of Novara about the administration of Justice…”. The two castles are: the lower “castrum” or “castrum vetus”, normally referred to as “Castellone” (big castle), and the upper castle or “castrum novum”, today hosts a clinic. As the historian Stoppa says: “let’s concentrate on the “Castellone”, whose date of erection and names of the first constructor and dweller are unknown as well as its further developments. The inhabitants name Castellone the present villa, located on the south hill of the village looking like an elegant hill cottage rather than an ancient castle”. Already in 1686, we learn from a tenancy agreement that “the lower castle has many noble and rural residences, several cellars, lofts, a church, stables, cattle sheds, as well as an oven, a winepress, tuns and vessels with all kinds of other comforts that are sought for a noble “habitatione” (“habitation”) besides the one for the “massari” (“farmers). Analyzing a picture of the early 1900’s belonging to today’s owners, one can distinguish a central keep and the roofs covered with tiles before being transformed into cute terraces with concrete balconies. Further on, analyzing the wall shape of the buildings extending northward almost like an ellipse, one can see the “castrum vetus” was composed of an austere square tower with fortification, which are enclosed by a protective strong revetment. The walls of the tall square still show the herringbone structure, which is only partially visible in the ring-revetment”. To the eyes of visitors, the ancient mansion reveals a subtle, quiet, romantic charm, just as a nice country villa can spread also to the cosy and panoramic garden, rich in English roses. The charm increases when one reaches the “Castellone” on foot (parking one’s car in the central village squares): walking along the ancient cobbled “Sottoronchi” road winding among ancient vineyards, in a flash, one finds oneself in front of the main door’s entrance, with an emblem above , which is still today protected by the house of the guard.

ATL Novara
